GRAND SALINE — The West Rusk Lady Raiders’ long winning streak came to an end last weekend when they were swept by the Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers in their Area playoff series. They fell 0-14 in game one on Friday and 0-7 in game two on Saturday.
The Lady Raiders managed a handful of hits each game against Mt. Vernon’s Alexa Taylor but couldn’t get runners home.
In game one, Lilly Waddell, Macie Blizzard and Natalie Christy hit a single each.
Waddell started on the pitcher’s mound for one-third of an inning where she surrendered one hit and four runs, walked five and struck out one. Christy took over for the game’s remaining 3.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs, walking three and striking out two.
The Lady Tigers captured a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They collected more runs in the next three innings leading to an early, fifth-inning victory.
On Saturday the Lady Raiders fared better but Mt. Vernon still took an early lead. They scored with two singles in the top of the first by Cameron Pope and Summer Rogers and added three more runs in the top of the third with two hits, two walks and a West Rusk error.
The Lady Raiders had seven hits with Waddell going 3-for-3 at the plate. Piper Morton and Blizzard each hit a single. Morton also stole one base.
Waddell pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits, walking five and striking out five.
Taylor allowed three hits and struck out 14 in game one. In game two she allowed five hits and struck out 11.
West Rusk ends their season with a 24-2 record overall.
