The first-ever Mike Wilhite Golf Classic to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Rusk County is fast approaching. 

The club’s chief executive officer, Peggy McAlister, said that all monies raised go back into the general fund in support of ongoing programs.

“It helps keep the doors open serving 125 students,” she said. “This club provides a safe place and positive environment. We have programs on character building and leadership as well as healthy lifestyles.”

McAlister has been the CEO of the club for 14 years having gotten involved as a parent member. She eventually joined the board and ascended to her current position.

As an added bonus, former Atlanta Braves and local baseball product Tyrell Jenkins will be the tournament’s special guest. 

The St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft drafted Jenkins. He made his major league debut in June of 2016 after spending time in the minor leagues.

The four-person golf scramble will be hosted at the Wood Hollow Golf Course in Longview beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday July 29.

The check-in will commence at 11 a.m. followed by lunch and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Contest opportunities will be shoot for the green, hole-in-one, putting, closest to the pin and longest drive. Sponsorships are available from tournament level ($2,500) all the way to hole sponsors ($100).
