Fred Douglas (Sam) Lewis was born the eighth of nine children to the late Tommy and Pearlene Johnson Lewis on August 12, 1949 in Long Branch, Panola County, Texas. He accepted Christ at an early age at the Corinth Baptist Church and attended the Minden School System and graduated in 1967. Fred and his family later moved to Henderson, Texas and he joined Mt. Hebron Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his health failed him.
One day while hanging out with his cousin, he met the love of his life, Dorothy “Dot” Sanders and in April of 1971 he made her his wife.
Sam made a positive impact wherever he went and work was no exception. Sharing his great personality around the community, he worked at Transit Mix, Cooper Trucking and most recently, Henderson Independent School District. His work with the school district is where he touched the lives of so many people.
Sam Lewis was one-of-a–kind. He never met a stranger and he lived life to its fullest. If you were ever blessed to cross his path you were likely greeted with a very friendly “What’s up Kinfolk” or “It’s gonna be alright Cuz, it’s rough out here in this world.” His smile was contagious and when you would see him he was always showing off his pretty white teeth.
Preceding Sam in death were his parents: Tommy and Pearlene Lewis; brothers: James, Alfred and Clarence Lewis and one sister: Bonnie Lewis Hill.
Left to cherish his memory in God’s loving care are his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Lewis; daughter, Waunetta Lewis of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, Tremayne (Kaylor) Lewis of Virginia; two grand daughters, Elgina (Alex) Salazar of Henderson, Texas and Brianna (Neil) Harkless of Kilgore, Texas; brother, Billy Joe Lewis of Palm Desert, California; three sisters, Melba Pauley of Henderson, Texas; Ernestine Lewis and Eva Stephenson both of Longview, Texas; one unborn grandson, Zayden Samuel Lewis; four step grandchildren: Alex, Ayila, Dillon and Jasmine Salazar and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and “kinfolk”.
Public viewing will be held Friday, November 15, 2019 from 1-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
