Basil entered Heaven Feb. 22, 2012, in Tyler. He was born Feb. 13, 1938, in Oak Grove, La., to the late Ellis Hill and Rosa Mae Hill Valentine. Basil and his family relocated to Henderson in December of 1975. He was a barber and the former owner at 20th Century Hair Designs, and was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for 36 years where he loved being a greeter. Basil never met a stranger, and enjoyed sharing his faith to anyone who was willing to listen. Though he battled numerous types of cancer for almost 30 years, Basil was a constant encourager. He routinely called and visited with those who were sick or home bound. Basil’s passions were his children and grandchildren. His legacy will live on through them.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, Basil spent much of his time volunteering with various civic organizations such as Heritage Syrup Festival, Henderson Depot Museum, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Joe Craig Youth Project Show, and the East Texas Antique Tractor Club. He formerly served the Henderson Lions Club as a president and served Texas Lions Club as zone chairman for District 2-S1. He sponsored numerous children to attend the Texas Lions Camp for children in Kerrville and was a recipient of the Jack Wiech Fellow Award for Texas Lions Camp for Children. He was a charter member and an officer of the Rusk County National Wild Turkey Federation. Most recently, Basil was nominated for the Henderson Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award.
Basil was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis Hill and Rosa Mae Hill Valentine; two sons, Eddie Hill and Mark Hill.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Genieva Cooper Hill of Henderson; sons, Steve Hill and wife Carol of Land of Lakes, Fla., and Brian Hill and wife Janet of Mission Viejo, Calif.; a daughter, Denise Hill Booker and husband Steven of Henderson; grandchildren, Lindsey Hill, Landon Hill, Tanner Hill, Natalie Hill, Pearson Booker, and Kaemyn Booker; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
