Graveside services for Mrs. Barbara Harris Read, 84, of Longview, formerly of Henderson, were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2020, at Craig Cemetery with Dr. Raul Benitez officiating.
Interment followed under the direction of Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home.
The family did receive friends from 1 - 2 p.m. on Saturday, at Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home.
Mrs. Read passed from this life on November 9, 2020, at Arabella of Longview. She was born October 26, 1936, in Henderson to the late Bryan and Esther (Craig) Harris and lived most all of her life in Rusk County. Barbara graduated from Henderson High School and went on to receive her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University. She then spent a career in education, retiring as an English professor at Kilgore College. In her spare time and then retirement, Mrs. Read enjoyed traveling and bird watching, and she was a member of the Henderson Women’s Forum. Barbara was a long time member of the Henderson Seventh Day Adventist Church where she served as church pianist for nearly 30 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Wally Read; and a brother, Donald C. Harris.
Survivors include her children, Carol Woerndle and husband George of Red River, New Mexico, and Dr. Jeff Jones and wife Beth of Longview; grandchildren, Daniel Madewell and spouse Julia, Dr. Travis Jones, Rebecca Marsh and husband Patrick, and Caroline Jones and fiancé Matt Stewart; four great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Travis Jones, Matt Stewart, Richard Harris, Neil Harris, Paul Harris, and Robert Harris.
