Candiss Smith

Editor’s Note: The Henderson News will feature several of this year’s Henderson’s Best recipients in the coming weeks. The Henderson’s Best section will publish Nov. 25. Candiss Smith was voted Best Receptionist/Secretary.

Thirteen years ago Candiss Smith began praying for a job that would allow her to use the accounting skills she learned in college. At that same time Richard and Bonnie Ferguson were praying to hire someone as a bookkeeper.

One day after church Bonnie and Smith talked and Bonnie decided to hire Smith at their CPA firm.

“I was completely ecstatic,” Smith said. “When I received my first paycheck, I immediately notified the welfare office that I was now employed and no longer needed food stamp assistance. It felt like a huge accomplishment knowing I was doing something I loved and no longer needed assistance to purchase food for our family.”

Smith spent a good part of her childhood moving all around Texas and other states before landing in Henderson.

“My senior year my family and I had moved 30 times,” Smith said. “We moved back to Texas the day after I graduated. We moved to Hughes Springs and I began college at North Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant.“

She met her husband, Russell Smith, in 1988 as a teenager and at the time next door neighbor, but the two didn’t marry till 1999.

Together they have five children, Jarrod Smith and Meagan, Kimberly Powell, Heather Smith Fears, Ashley Powell and Jerry Smith.

She also has seven grandchildren, Grace, Ryder and Landon Fears; Zoe Smith, Arianna, Gracie and Amber.

“I love my job and I love interacting with people,” Smith said. “I feel blessed to work in a Christian environment and blessed to work with Richard and Bonnie. They have been a blessing to me and have been flexible with my hours over the years so I could attend school functions, band and choir concerts my children were involved in and basketball games my daughter played in.”

For Smith working with numbers and bookkeeping is easy relaxing and her little escape from home.

She is the first face you see when you come in to Richard Ferguson, CPA and the person you talk to when you call.

“I love Henderson because it’s quiet and everyone is so friendly,” Smith said. “It’s great because you can just walk through town and you can’t do that in the big cities. So its just a nice quiet, friendly town.”

Smith was not the only one at the firm to win a Henderson’s Best title this year, Richard Ferguson won Best CPA as well.

“He is a very nice, respectful man,” Smith said about Ferguson. “He and Bonnie are both Christians and that is just one thing I love about it. Its just been wonderful working with them. He’s extremely smart and been doing this for over 40 years.”

Smith and her husband stay involved in Ebenezer Baptist Church teaching children’s chapel at times and doing different things at the church. She also spends spare time with her grandchildren and says she enjoys spoiling them.
