School ended on May 23; however, the Lion Pride Band wasn’t finished. On June 3 approximately 60 students from the Lion Pride Band represented HHS at the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest or TSSEC.
The students representing for HHS earned a total of 52 medals at TSSEC. First division gold medal solo performance winners were: Robert Mills, Brayden Loosier, Olivia Mtanous and Grace Lane.
At the State level solo performances have the opportunity to earn a silver medal for a division two because of the difficulty in judging. The second division silver medal winning soloists were: Mia Hay, Caleb Pike, Jana Higgs, Riley Foster, Sadie Watson, Lilly Turlington, Sydney Bradley, Grace Jones, Kennedy Foster, Katie King, Emma Coleman, Megan Hairgrove, Kylie Mashburn, Hannah Parrott, Makayla Oliver, Kailey Dooley, Maci Hale, Kayla Oliver, Jeri Ann Jones.
First division ensemble bronze medals earned were: Brandon Ashley, Kole Jordan, and Robert Mills for their trombone trio, Lara Chenault, Mia Hay, Gisela Ramirez, and Turner Sugg for their French Horn quartet, as well as twirling quartets including Riley Foster, Jana Higgs, Jolie Bryan, Carlie Doerge, Lilly Turlington, Aadie Watson, Sydney Bradley, Kennedy Foster, Grace Jones, Olivia Mtanous, and Grace Lane.
After the TSSEC contest was completed each judge was allowed a certain number of Outstanding Soloist awards. These awards are earned by only 2 percent of the over 25,000 instrumental attendees each year. This year Brayden Loosier, one of the drum majors for the Lion Pride Band, earned the Outstanding Performer Award on his performance of the Euphonium solo Beautiful Colorado.
The Lion Pride Band will be gearing up beginning, July 17, for the 2019-20 school year. Registration will be that day. Freshmen have their first rehearsal Friday morning July 19 and the first full band rehearsal is that afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. Summer band will begin on July 22.
