A tour Tuesday let members of a 2013 bond steering committee take a look at progress of the new Henderson Middle School a year after construction began and two years since voters approved the $27 million spending proposal.
“This is going to be awesome,” superintendent Keith Boles told the 20 or so people on the tour.
And, he said, plans still call for certificate of occupancy for the district by Aug. 15, a little more than a week before classes begin.
“There is a plan in place, where they work around the clock seven days a week to be finished in time for the new school year,” Boles said during the tour.
Once completed, the school will contain about 140,000 square feet, including portions of the existing campus that are being renovated this summer to match the new building.
The sixth-grade wing, band hall and athletic dressing rooms will be attached on the east side of the new school, which will face Richardson Avenue adjacent to the existing campus.
On Tuesday, those in attendance got to sign a steel beam in an area containing classrooms for eighth-graders.
The new school, with a price tag of about $28.5 million once all furnishings are purchased, will also contain a three-tiered dining hall, a media center/library, and three separate areas of classrooms for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade.
The competition gym will seat 900 with bleachers on both sides of the court, and a practice gym will contain seating for 250.
The new building will offer controlled access, with only one door for entry during regular school hours. The existing middle school, first opened in 1952, has more than 40 entrances and students must go outside when changing classes.
