A 61-year-old bicyclist was the latest fatality victim on a Rusk County roadway Thursday morning.
Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that Michael Steven Manili of Denver, Colo., died from injuries after being struck by a passing vehicle on U.S. Highway 79 South, just west of Loop 571 outside the Henderson city limits.
Henderson-based DPS trooper Cpl. Jesse Stewart said the incident is currently under investigation, but that drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the collision.
“The driver of the vehicle that struck the victim stopped and contacted authorities immediately,” he said. “The victim was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.”
First responders from Henderson Fire Department and the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office were also at the scene.
The wreck marks the 24th fatality accident on a Rusk County roadway in 2013, a number that Stewart said is as much as he’s seen over a single year in his 19-year career as a trooper.
“We’ve had some years that were busier than others, but this year has stood out from the rest,” he said. “I’m not sure that Rusk County has ever seen a year like this, as far as road fatalities are concerned.”
